CD ReviewsThe Full "Spectrum" Michael B. Richman | Portland, Maine USA | 04/10/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "Cedar Walton may be best known as the pianist in arguably the greatest edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1961-64), but he is also a jazz artist that has a recorded legacy now going into its sixth decade! In fact, I had the great pleasure of seeing him in concert last night at Bowdoin College. This Prestige CD, which is unfortunately going out-of-print, collects two albums from the late 1960s, "Spectrum" and "The Electric Boogaloo Song." The former was recorded on May 24, 1968 and features Blue Mitchell, Clifford Jordan, Richard Davis and Jack DeJohnette, while the latter hails from January 14, 1969 with the same frontline, but with Bob Cranshaw and Mickey Roker replacing on bass and drums respectively. Fans of late 60s Lee Morgan will be right at home with this soul-tinged modern jazz -- no surprise as Cedar was Lee's pianist around this time too. To hear the full "Spectrum" of a great artist, check out this disc while its still available, and his newest Voices Deep Within as well."
