Young cellist Schiefen does a fine job

"This is one of the first versions of the Dvorak Cello Concerto that I heard (I bought it based on price alone--$4.99!) and I have listened to quite a few renditions since, and I must say that Guido Schiefen does a fine job here, rivalling the big dogs. He walks a nice line between the overly passionate and the overly reserved. Well-worth picking up even if you have some better-known cellists doing this famous piece. Adrian Leaper, who has done some nice conducting work with other orchestras on the Naxos label, handles things well here, especially with the strings, and the recording is quite good. By the way, the picture on the listing is not the true pic from the disc. The budget Arte Nova label has put out some fine products (check out their Bruckner series with Skrowaczewski, and their Enescu series with Mandeal) and this contribution is no exception!"
