CD Reviews

Classics of the Folk Era
Henry R. Kujawa | "The Forbidden Zone" (Camden, NJ) | 12/03/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"In the days before The Beatles, folk music was one of the biggest and best-selling genres. The Chad Mitchell Trio were surely among the best (up there with The Kingston Trio and, my favorites, The Limeliters). Fans of the CMT are lucky these days; about half their output has been reissued on CD. When this collection came out, it was the ONLY one containing their original recordings (and it's still the only place to find some of these songs). My faves include "Lizzie Borden" (a supposed commentary on "suburban living"), "The John Birch Society" (when "patriotism" goes bananas), "The Marvelous Toy" (sometimes simple childhood joys are the best), "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream" (an anti-war anthem The Limeliters have also included regularly in live shows) and "Violets Of Dawn" (an absolutely gorgeous recording with John Denver on lead vocal, from his 2nd album with The MT). The first 4 CMT albums have been reissued on CD since this; if only somebody would get around to doing the rest!"
Influential Novelty/Humor Songs

"Who out there in the funny-songs biz today *hasn't* been influenced by the Chad Mitchell Trio? The Marvelous Toy and Lizzie Borden have each been covered multiple times, but it's well worth the listen to go back to the original. Tight harmonies, good instrumentals, and fall-over-laughing funny words. A+."
