"Franz Berwald (1796-1868) is a Swedish composer of the early Romantic period largely remembered today for his symphonic music. The three compositions on this disc provide an accessible introduction Berwald's gifts as a composer of chamber music. All feature the piano, an instrument for which Berwald wrote with ideomatic grace and style. All are tuneful and charming. The Quintet is a robust and spirited exercise. The duo in D sings with singular eloquence, and the Piano Trio has a Chopinesque quality that beguiles. Hyperion furnishes a beautifully balanced sound that highlights the piano, but not at the expense of the ensemble playing. The Gaudier Ensemble seems wholly at ease with this delighful repertoire. Highly recommended to those looking for congenial chamber writing."
