If only...

(3 out of 5 stars)
"It hurts to give this album only three stars because the quality of the performance is so good. Unfortunately, the quality of the recording is equally as bad. In my opinion, The Brothers' versions of Wilson Pickett's, You're So Fine, and James Brown's, Please, Please, Please are as good as covers get. They went straight to heart of these songs, pulled out the best elements and infused them with the unique emotive quality of their vocals.
The other tracks are excellent as well and there is an interesting version of Time Has Come Today, with awkward, breathy, laughing and the "cookoo" call showing up at the end instead of the beginning.
The trouble lies in the quality of the source recording. The instruments are audible but so low that they are repeatedly drowned out by the vocals, giving the album an a cappella feel. If only the mobile recording truck had been parked outside.
