Album Description

CHANDLER TRAVIS - writer-songsinger CD (Sonic Trout, 1992, 15 tracks) solo debut featuring eleven Travis originals, a collaboration with lyricist David Greenberger (Men & Volts, Duplex Planet), a song by Steve Shook, (another erstwhile Casual and the other half of Travis Shook and the Club Wow), Bob Dylans Spanish Harlem Incident, and an Armenian sounding adaptation of Yes Sir, Thats My Baby that noone really wants to take credit for. An effort that hearkens back to the glory days of such stylistic slug-fests as the Beach Boys Sunflower and the first Randy Newman album -yet even more obscure!

Fine madness

"Ranging widely over the vast wasteland of pop music styles, Chandler plays, sings, and writes so well and so entertainingly that it's remarkable he's not more widely known. Whether it's the bad attitude of "This Radio Station" o the semi-pompous poetry of "I threw some meat into the pond", Chandler is funny, clever, and sometimes quite touching. His "novelty" songs are more incisive and interesting that 98% of everybody else's serious tunes. When he writes more conventional tunes, it's always from an off-kilter perspective which reminds me vaguely of a happier Elvis Costello, or the better stuff from Ray Davies. I'm especially taken with "New Version of Us", a great after-the-breakup pop song."
