Synopsis

Album Description
2007 compilation from the British band who were at the forefront of the 'shoe-gazing' scene that swept the UK during the early '90s. The 'shoe-gazing' scene (also known as 'the scene that celebrates itself') appeared just as the 'Madchester' and 'baggy' scenes were morphing into Techno and music fans were longing for real guitars again. Chapterhouse, like other bands from the scene including Ride and Lush, were able to turn their guitars up to near-deafening levels yet still create music that was beautiful, atmospheric and haunting. 15 tracks including 'We Are The Beautiful', 'Pearl', 'Falling Down' and others. Camden.

CD Reviews

Shu-gaze Under the Radar

"Not on the level of Ride, MBV, or Slowdive, but a band from this era that deverves some notice. The drums sound a bit dated, but the over all feel is still there."
Good mix of songs, but a bit sloppy on Sony BMGs part

"The music contained on this best of is great-Chapterhouse are a strong example of the Shoegaze era. My only complaint with this collection is Sony's packaging. On the cover of the CD they list a series of songs that are supposed to appear on the record and the last song on the list is "Treasure". This song is not on the CD. Also inside the booklet their are only 14 songs listed with publishing information. For some reason they left off the 15th track "On the way to fly".

Anyway as a release the record company could have done better. I just think it is a little sloppy and shows this to be a rush job without much care for the band and its catalog. It is not as much of a mess as their (Sony BMG) Boo Radleys "Best of the Boo Radleys", which suffered from questionable inclusion and criminal exclusions.

Ultimately, this is still a good starting point for an introduction to Chapterhouse.
