"There is no american equivalent for Trenet. He was a wonderful singer, but also a highly competent musician and songwriter (he was also a novelist). Trenet was unique and magnifique. This cd draws on recordings from the 1930's and 1940's when Trenet was at the top of his game. His voice is in top form on songs like Fleur Bleu and the perfect Que Reste-t-il de Nos Amours?. Trenet penned all but one of the songs on this disc one cannot help but be in awe of his talent. The original French version of La Mer (redone by Bobby Darin as Beyond the Sea) is here as well. Trenet's lyrics have a depth and a surrealism that the English version could never replicate. It has a gentle melancholy swing to it, which is very different from Darren's interpretation. Every track is a joy. This is exquisite music."
