"Chavela Vargas is known for her rendition of Mexican and Latin American folkloric music and rancheras. She has produced over 80 albums since the early 60s.
1. Chavela's beautiful voice is not present in this album. Her voice is nothing like it was in the 70, 80, 90s. Even her voice in the Frida movie sound closer to what It used to be. Check "Paloma Negra or La Llorona" on Frida soundtrack music. Her voice (at her late 80s) found in this CD does not give justice to this wonderful legend.
2. The songs in this CD are not interpreted in her usual style.
In short, I would not recommend this CD for anyone except collectors, who would like to have everything from her. Look for a younger Chavela Vargas in previous albums. You can find excellent interpretation in some of her old albums that has been remastered into Cd's, such as Noche de Bohemia (Bohemian Night), Boleros, Volver Volver, or compilations such as Le Canta a Mexico, Sentimiento de México, and Collecion de Oro."

"The 1st time I listened to clips I went to order this pronto. This is my 5th Vargas CD.Its a slight departure from her usual cacion rancheras (farmer's song)genre.CD has a vast music instruments, piano, guitara.bajo, violin, trompeta & saxphone. The album opens with a duet song 'Sombrass" done with Ana Belen Oh!!!what a sumptious song, unbelievable.Another duet "Encadenados" with one of the most respected Mexican composer, song writer, pianist, Armando Manzanero. The sax adds an amazing feel to the song. Another duet "Nosotros" with Joaquin Sabinaalso a respected Spanish song composer, writer & musician is my most exquisite song in this album, the piano ,drums & bajo etc are too just marvelous for words. The song "mi secundo amor" very nice.Another duet "No te importe saber" with Lucrecia. She has a polished fresh voice & the combination with Vargas is just excellent. The whole CD is sublime-no skip track. There is no "Mariachi Orchestra" as mentioned by one reviewer. The only song that has that feel is 'La Bien Paga" & that sound is only minimal because of the violin & Mexican trumpets. You must hear this song being sung by Diego El Cigala, the Spanish Flamenco gypsy singer from Spain ,Madrid with Bebo Valdez from the album "Lagrimas Negras"Oh!!what a song.Overall this CD will appeal to Jazz vocal fans, R&B, and world music lovers.Chavela Vargrass is a treasure to listen to.She is 87 this year & still going strong.Buy this with no inhibitions & u won't be disappointed.Take it from a big Chavela Vargas fan. Adios"

"La Chavela has a voice so rich, so deep, so full of emotion, that every time I hear this album I am deeply touched. She is in perfect control of every single word, of every single syllable, of every pause, of every lingering of a passage, she sings herself so intensely into to your very inner feelings and you emotions so you say: "Yes, this good lady knows your love, she knows exactly how you feel. This is it"."
Good but not the same

"This is a good CD for collectors and fans of Chavela who want to pay tribute to this grand star of Mexican music. The musicians are excellent, and the with Ana Belen and Joaquin Sabina are accomplished. But this and other modern recordings don't reflect what Chavela's voice was, and sometimes it is painful to listen to some parts of the songs where she sounds so different from what she was. It is a pitty that her original voice is hard to find in digital versions."
