This music will blow your mind

"I picked up this album on a lark and I am so glad that I did. As I perused Amoeba Records, searching for new music, a clerk noticed what I was holding and stopped me to tell me how much she loved Chavela Vargas, so I bought it.

Clearly, I am a bit of a latecomer, because Vargas is in her mid-80's. A legend of latin music who was unknown to me (both Costa Rica and Mexico claim her, Almodovar claims to have rediscovered her) until about a year ago.

Her life is practically the stuff of fiction (at least if half of what I read is true). Nonetheless, all of that is peripheral to her art, which is singing the hell out of rancheras. The sheer power and raw emotion of her voice is stunning. Buy it and see for yourself."
