Quite possibly the DEFINITIVE Broadway musical...
Byron Kolln | the corner where Broadway meets Hollywood | 02/18/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Michael Bennett's choreographic masterpiece...the blood, sweat and tears of dancers and their quest for success...the longest-running musical in Broadway history...

A CHORUS LINE is still the definitive 1970s Broadway musical. It set the stage alight for a record-breaking 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running musical in Broadway history until "Cats" (and later again "Phantom of the Opera") knocked it from it's esteemed mantle.

Crafted from interviews with many real-life dancers (most of whom later formed the original cast), A CHORUS LINE is the story of a group of dancers trying out for parts in a new, never-named Broadway musical. There were no sets, except for some mirrors that flew on and off the stage during selected numbers; and the costumes were limited to dance leotards and warm-up gear. It must have seemed like Broadway was reinventing the wheel. Audiences were riveted.

Hearing the album again on this latest reissue (which is the exact same disc as the earlier 1998 Broadway Masterworks pressing but in a new, "eco-pack" cardboard sleeve), you can still taste the excitement from the very first notes of "I Hope I Get It". Donna McKechnie's peerless original Cassie seems to burst right through the speakers during her tour-de-force "Music and the Mirror"; Kelly Bishop's wry Sheila still marks her performance of "At the Ballet" as one of the most bittersweet moments in the score, and the entire troupe comes together for the chilling "What I Did for Love".

A watershed moment in musical theater history. This deserves a place in every cast album collection. My highest recommendation. [Masterworks Broadway 88697 49916 2]"
