Synopsis

It might be tempting to describe Kentucky's Chris Knight as the poor man's Steve Earle (if the original weren't still doing a pretty good job at it). While the hard twang of the guitar and the hardscrabble lyrics recall Earle's early classic albums, Knight continues to establish himself on his fourth release as one of the most powerful (and underrecognized) artists in alternative country. Produced by Gary Nicholson and mixed by Earle's "twangtrust" partner Ray Kennedy, the album pulls no punches, whether rocking the roadhouse at the end of "River Road," venting anger at the developers who are treating Grandpa's land like "Dirt," or detailing a dead-end life in the title track. Yet the redemptive "Saved by Love" and the yearning "Too Close to Home" evoke equally strong emotions that balance the album's darker strains. If "Cry Lonely" isn't a hit for Knight, it deserves to be one for somebody. Knight's eye for detail and command of tone have the compression of great short stories, though Southern Gothic rarely rocks this hard. --Don McLeese

"Chris Knight's writing matures beautifully. On "Enough Rope" his 4th installment,he reveals a man a little more thoughtful and sweeter. The intro song "Jack Blue" is classic Chris Knight, pool halls and fighting on Friday nights. Next up is the beautifully sung "Cry Lonely". I have to resist the urge hit replay over & over. "Rural Route" is a touching tale of a man gone home, to say goodbye to his dead Mother? His old self? It resonates longing and peace. My favorite is "Old Man" a day in a life well lived.

I pre-purchased 4 copies of this CD. My faith in this artist is strong. He didn't let me down. Every song is poetry. Every song will make you feel. He can make you cry. He can make you remember."

"Another AWESOME offering from the FINEST songwriter today!!!

Enough Rope is another example of this man's GREATNESS!!

The first four songs are AWESOME!!. "Cry Lonely" being the best. "Enough Rope" is a dagger of a song. Finest, most honest song I've heard from Knight.

The cd is a bit darker in ways. A little bit harder with more edge .....which is fine.

There are a couple of missteps for me...."River Road" and "Bridle on a Bull" are really not Knight's normal calibur....But...Far better than just about anything else out there!!

PLEASE LORD...Let this very talented young man finally win a bigger auidence....He SO deserves it!!"
A missed comparison?

"Excellent cd - bought without having heard a thing by him in advance and most pleasantly surprised. However, I don't see the Steve Earle comparison - to me this is reminscent of classic John Mellancamp and anyone who loves Mellancamp circa Scarecrow and Uh-Huh will love this"
