""Sundiata" is Chris Potter's second release for the Criss Cross Jazz-label. His talents had not gone unnoticed since his debut recording as a leader, as by the time this recording was released, he had already transferred to Concord Records and recorded 2 more albums. This album opens with a a brief but beautiful introduction by drummer Al Foster, in whose band Chris Potter would tour Europe shortly after this album was recorded. In a set of mostly originals, Potter shows he's not about to take prisoners ! Original compositions like "Fear of flying", "Hibiscus" and "New Lullaby" are both beautifully crafted and seem to have truly inspired all members of the band. Switching from alto to tenor to alto saxophone, Potter proves to be a master of any saxophone (on later recordings he would also add the bass clarinet). Pianist Kevin Hays, who seemed to be ever-present in the 1990's when great young jazz-musicians came to light, plays in his usual beautiful style. Bassist Doug Weiss proves what an incredibly talented musician he is in his own right, and drummer Al Foster ... any questions about this guy ? He's an absolute MASTER ! The usual crystal clear recording from recording engineer Max Bolleman truly showcases his brilliance, as well as that of the other band members. Straight-ahead contemporary jazz from a great band ! "Not only is this one of Potter's finest works to date, but it's one of his earliest. At the ripe old age of 23, Potter demonstrates on this disc that he is a natural born sax phenom. His version of "Body and Soul" is absolutely breath-taking. It makes me laugh it is so good, especially the 45 second a cappella cadenza at the end. Potter is rarely heard on alto anymore, but for those interested in his alto work, he rips some fine solos here, especially on the 16-bar blues closer. Good tunes, good band, and Potter.....5 Stars"
