With Bigger & Blacker, Chris Rock teams up with producer Prince Paul once again; the duo snagged a Grammy together for their work on 1997's brash Roll with the New. Bigger is a cutting-edge mishmash of studio skits, live recordings, and crazy musical numbers with guest shots from Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ice Cube, Biz Markie, Gerald Levert, and others. The bulk of the album is road-tested live material (mostly recorded at the Comedy Corner in West Palm Beach, Florida, in May 1999) that ranges from the difference between ghetto and suburban shopping malls to taxes, homophobia, insurance, and women. Sandwiched between the live bits are a send-up of N.W.A.'s "F**k tha Police" with Ice Cube; a ribald interpretation of "Brown Sugar" with Biz Markie; and "Me and ODB," a hilarious, pimped-out ghetto fairytale set to the funky beat of AWB's "Pick up the Pieces." Rock's inescapable appeal lies in his delivery--his manic energy teeters on the edge, reined in just enough so that it remains on this side of manic. Bigger & Blacker shows that Rock is equally at home whether flexing his standup material in front of a live audience or goofing in the studio. --Spence Abbott

No Stopping Chris Rock On A Roll...
11/07/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Again another funny album that skewers all the right people in the tenderest of places. School shootings, whiny white males, bad rappers, good booty, Hillary, Bill and Monica all get their just desserts from Rock.About the sound...it's good. It's not the audience bootleg quality that some reviewers would have you believe...It gives you that small comedy club feel with less of the bombastic audience response from his past album. The song, No Sex (in the champagne room) really cracks me up. A good investment if you want to laugh and forget all your troubles for just an hour or so.Lighten up...the truth tickles."

The Stand-Up Is Great, the Skits and Songs Are Hit and Miss

"It's unfair to rechristen Chris Rock as the New Richard Pryor, but if Mr. Richard Pryor has an heir to his throne, it is almost certainly Rock. On his third album (after the good BORN SUSPECT and the excellent ROLL WITH THE NEW), as he did with ROLL, he splits up the stand-up with skits and song parodies. The stand-up is some of his best. The first two stand-up tracks, "Black Mall" and "Crazy White Kids," are among his greatest hits. Rock takes on such current events as Columbine ("'What music did they listen to?' WHO CARES?! What music did Hitler listen to? What was on his CD player?") and the Lewinski Scandal ("The President is a man, and a man is basically only as faithful as his options.") and talks about such timeless themes as homophobia ("There's no reason to be homophobic. Everyone has at least a gay cousin."), men having affairs ("It's the same two women: The one you love, and the one who loves you. One has the best...the other makes the best pancakes in the world.") and, yes, race ("There ain't a White man in this room who'd trade places with me, and I'm rich!"), sometimes profoundly, sometimes profanely, and always avoiding the cliches and stereotypes on which lesser comics coast. The only problem is the sound quality, which slides in and out, so be prepared to keep your finger on the volume control button. As far as the skits and songs, Rock is a "Saturday Night Live" alumnus, and while he's one of the best of late, he demonstrates that show's biggest weakness. While the premises of his skits range from amusing to very clever, too many of them go on for far too long. His shorter skits ("ODB - W.O.W." #1, 2, 3; "Roger & Zapp," "Savion Glover") are hilarious, but some of his longer skits ("Nerd & Fly Girl," "Table Dance/Snow Flake") go on forever, long after they've ceased to be entertaining.Still, his stand-up and his funnier pieces, especially "No Sex," "Me & ODB" and the divinely inspired ghost track, are worth sitting through his pieces that drag. And remember: There is no sex in the champagne room."
