Synopsis

Although Heinrich Schutz enjoyed an exalted reputation in pre-J.S. Bach 17th-century Germany, only a few of his works, including the motets and Psalms of David, are commonly performed today. The Christmas work performed on this disc--"The Historia of the Joyful and Merciful Birth of God and Mary's Son, Jesus Christ"--adopts a form that was later used in the great passions and oratiorios of Bach. That is, the gospel story is told by means of an Evangelist narrator with choral and orchestral interludes and commentary. Schutz also employs techniques of musical characterization common to Baroque music and to that of later periods, especially in opera. Angels are represented by strings, the people by wind instruments. King Herod gets trumpets; the shepherds, flutes. It's a charming and unusual work that's performed here with utmost stylistic integrity and technical mastery--enhanced by outstanding soloists. --David Vernier

CD Reviews

Stunning!
07/25/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Many chamber choirs ruin the essentially intimate nature of the music they sing by belting every line out with equal vigor and absolutely warbling the top line. This is definitely not the case, as the choir gives a dynamic, intimate and well balanced performance. No shrill sopranos here! Rich intonation, technically flawless diction (it's easy for even native speakers to splutter when singing in German), good balance between choir and orchestra; this recording is amazing. The choir's sound is compact, fluid, polished, and even reverent! The soloists are wonderful, emotive without being pushy. A truely great collection of music, perfect for evoking a reverent holiday mood or just relaxing at the end of a long day."
