"Having spent the best part of my first nineteen years of life in Chester, under the shadow of it's fine cathedral, I can recommend this recording to anyone who wants to experience a warm yet distinctly different Christmas in music. David Poulter's appointment to Chester did the choir the power of good; one need only listen to previous recordings in comparison with this one to identify the improvement. What sets this disc apart is that, having gone through most of the traditional carols in volumes one and two (from York and Durham respectively) an innovative programme was needed. Whilst it could be argued that the Advent plainsong or Tavener's "The Lamb" aren't exactly "joyful", and such items as Plumstead's "A grateful heart" or Vann's "Virgin born, we bow before thee" are not specifically Christmas pieces, there is a warmth and homeliness that will draw listeners in. As is typical of Priory, the notes are brief and full texts are supplied. Take it as you will, but for me it will always remind me of some beautiful Christmases in the city that is my home."
