CD ReviewsUnderated musician / underated debut album musically Darren S. Wools | minneapolis | 09/01/2008 (3 out of 5 stars) "1978 christopher cross = unknown. Then in 1979... Though a giant success (multiple grammies in 1981), this album & cross have been written off as middle of the road & adult contemporary (which is somehow immediately negative). If people really examine the talent of cross & the elements of the album they may be surprised at the respect cross garnered in 1979. 1st of all this album has a huge list of guest musicians & vocalists - lenny castro, nicolette larson, JD souther, henley, tim b schmidt, eric johnson, michael omartian & most notably michael mcdonald whose vocals are very evident throughout the album. Cross is a very underated guitarist & vocalist. The musicianship is incredible thru & thru. The album begins with say you'll be mine which is poor but gives insight to the direction of cross's vocals & musical direction. Next is really don't know which immediately demonstrates his vocal range & guitar playing & features mcdonald's great vocal range which complement's cross's. Never be the same is also great song & features great piano & guitar performances. Ride like the wind (well known) is another great cross/mcdonald collaboration & has a great hook with some good tempo changes. The light is on features henley, jd souther, & tim b schmidt (eagles) which continues their backing vocal list (others include seger & boz scaggs). The eagle contribution also provides further depth in a great album demonstrating some respect from the established music scene. Sailing is good but known & no more to say. An overlooked song is minstrel gigolo & is sings thru sombers moods with great drumming & vocals. I think this an album that began the 80s with an intellectual earmark. Though cross couldn't have been rewarded more for his effort by the industry he has been disrespected by those who feel mainstream ballads are all for the birds. that's crap" A Great summer album for the relaxing time being Drew Hutchinson | Canal Fulton OH | 03/07/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "If they could give a PHD in music to any musician. They should give one to Christopher Cross and any of the other musician like Jackson Brown, Jame Taylor, Air Supply and Kenny Loggin. Because back then in the early 1980s they wrote music for people to relax to, and their music was like medican for the mind. As a music lover, Christopher Cross happends to be one of my all time faviort singers and his album Christopher Cross is one of my faviorts too. Its fresh every year, and was like this album was made yesterday insted of when it was made in 1979. I even listen to this album when ever I need the time to relax and get my mind off work. 14 years ago I bought this album on vynel at my local Goodwill store for a dollar, today all the goodwill stores and all the use record shops would sell this album for 25 cents. Now I own this album on CD and I have it on my Ipod. I even listen to it on my ipod when I'am working out at the rec center, even on the tredmill. Feel great every time. My family own a lake house in Indian Ohio which is between Columbus and Dayton. The house is on Lake front property. I guess the pink flamingo on the album cover said it all. So here what I do when ever I'am down at my lake house and you should try it too if you own a lake house with lake front property. When ever it summer time and its 7:30 pm and the sun is about to go down and its nice out and breezy. I take my boom box outside with me, put it next to the lawn chair, pop in the cd, pour myself a ice cold glass of wine cooler, Sit back and relax and let my mind float. Now is that a great combanation or what. I even listen to track 8 Sailing every time the sailboats go by on the lake, Hee Hee he. So buy this album and tell me if this the greatest album ever. Now if we can get the parents to get their teenage kids to listen to this album insted of that violent ganster rap music. Everything will be piecefull"
