Liszt's two huge oratorios are almost completely unknown. One of the most intelligent and complex composer/performers of the 19th century, his reputation as a virtuoso showman has almost completely eclipsed his other side: the spiritual, questing musical innovator and man of God. Christus is really a series of independent compositions that the composer assembled to put together as a musical overview of the life of Christ, and it's a work of uncompromising austerity. Try it when you're feeling particularly penitential, and while I wouldn't recommend listening to the entire thing at a sitting, from point to point the music has many beauties. This performance is very committed and excellently recorded. --David Hurwitz

"Liszts's Christus is an absolutely spiritual experience. It's full of complex and divine harmonies, and the choral and orchestral forces are commited on elevating us to the heights!

Be ready to be transformed!"
At finally a really spiritual Oratorio.

"

Hearing this Christus has been a real shocking and overwhelming experience.

It shocks for its incredible and compelling austerity achieved despite wide

use of sonic resources (orchestra, choirs, organ) that really show the spirit

of episodes in Christ`s life. As Hurwitz says, this is a masterwork of a real

and uncompromising austerity and elemental beauty, where musical ornaments and

technical manierisms are put away. This Dorati performance is the ideal to

get the whole idea of this spiritual and sound experience."
