"These concertos are wonderful pieces and do not in anyway deserve to be so woefully out of the standard repertory. They are complex and exceedingly well written, there are at times good tunes, and throughout the textures of orchestra and piano work tremendously well.
Each of the performances is by a different pianist, with the same orchestra and conductor. the performances are live and a DVD is included of the entire concert - the concert also being over 2 CDs.
Each performance is stunning, from the 1st (which is the largest of the concertos) to the wonderful 5th (which is the shortest).
Along with Beethoven, Saint Saens, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff who each wrote 5 concertos (the latter the 5th being the Rhapsody), Villa Lobos deserves to have these works heard with equal regularity.
It is my hope that now these concertos have such good recording, that they will eventually find their way into the standard repertory.
It is still worth seeking out also the performance of Felicja Blumenthal in the 5th concerto with the composer as well as having all five in this pressing.!!
I simply cant recommend this highly enough!
