It is just what the music was written for -- good background/listening music. The vocal tracks are a little weird, but not irritating. I liked it. Very easy to listen to while I work.

"I know that this was the first recording of Cirque's music, from the 1987 show. It sounds so unlike the later CDs. At times it almost sounds like (I hate to say this) elevator music. But that's only a couple of songs. "Bicyclettes", "Trapeze", and "Fil de Fer" are some of the great pieces, and "Pingouins" is just so much fun! Many of the songs are heard on the "Cirque Reinvente" video (which is a better arrangement). Since you can't pop a video in a CD player, listen to this and remember the early days...."
A little out dated, but still...

"As an avid fan of the Cirque, of course I own this CD. I also own the original soundtrack released in 1987, now out of print. This CD, released in 1994, was produced because of the demand for it. But the Cirque was trying to showcase a different composer, Benoit Jutras (who later composed the music for Quidam, La Nouba, and O), this CD contains more of the conceptual music written for the show, instead of the actual soundtrack of the show...now we understand why the original Varekai soundtrack was like that! Of course, if you have the chance to buy the original 1987 soundtrack (Auction places like eBay usually have one or two running at reasonable prices), I reccommend that, but this one is gratifying if the other is not available. Now, for those who have only heard the sondtracks to newer Cirque shows, such as Quidam, Dralion, or Varekai, be prepared for a different Cirque--one equipped with more synthesizers and mega-'80s keyboard blasts! But it's always interesting to check out the roots..."
Not the Soundtrack!

"If you saw the first touring Cirque du Soleil ("Reinvente'") and thought this was the soundtrack, you'll probably be very disappointed. The original soundtrack, recorded in 1987, seems to be unavailable. This CD was done in 1994, and the arrangements, the order of play, and even many of the songs are different. Comparing the same songs with the original (which I unfortunately bought only on cassette) shows how much more creative and energetic the earlier version was."
