"Small-group recordings by Clarence Williams from the period 1929-1937 show that he should be ranked with King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton as one of the top pioneers of jazz. Here we have wonderful versions of pop songs, jazz classics and blues, performed with zest and spirit. Instrumentalists like Willie 'The Lion' Smith, Fats Waller, James P Johnson, Cyrus St Clair, Henry 'Red' Allen and Lonnie Johnson all contribute masterfully to the total picture. A timeless gem, for sure."
