"The Clarke Trio on this CD is an incredible piece -- a reflection on WW1 that seems to say, "Where from here?" Alternately impressionistic, romantic, and dissonantly modern, it speaks to a time when the 20th century was still a vast, unknown expanse. The Bekova sisters' performance of the piece is by far the best I've heard: dramatic, singing, nuanced.
The other pieces on the CD are less amazing, but still quite fine. The Beaux Arts did the Ives trio better, IMO -- this performance is good, but somehow feels heavy and tangled, and the shape of the piece doesn't quite gel. The other Clarke is less profound but quite lovely. But never mind that. Get it for the Clarke trio, and discover this little-known masterpiece for yourself!"
