Synopsis

Any album that covers such a wide range of artists--from Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller to Guy Clark, George Jones, and Lefty Frizzell to Anne Murray and the Cheap Suit Serenaders--is bound to catch your eye. To be sure, Rani Arbo's quirky string-swing sound will intrigue fans of genre-benders like Dan Hicks, even if the licks here are sometimes only lukewarm rather than hot. Ukulele, mandolin, tenor banjo, Dobro, and homemade percussion all contribute to the musical mix. The result is certainly an eclectic and enjoyable listen, although pastiche sometimes does get in the way of the picking. Then again, isn't a pleasant, lounge-ready mix what you'd expect from an album called Cocktail Swing? --Marc Greilsamer

CD Reviews

Swinging High

"You can't help but be happy while listening to this album. It's full of fun, laughter and really lovely singing. How many albums have torch songs, crooning, jazz violin, ukelele AND kazoo solos? Not nearly enough. In addition, my husband and I are deeply grateful to finally know all the words to "Singing in the Bathtub", a classic we originally heard sung by Bugs Bunny. I've had the pleasure of hearing Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem (and Salamander Crossing) live several times, and from this album you can tell how much fun these guys have playing together, without even laying eyes on them. If you have the chance to see them live, do it, if only to witness the miracle of the Drumship Enterprise, but if you can't; this is the next best thing."

"If I ever find a sucker to marry me, I'm walking down the aisle to Rani Arbo singing "That's All."
This is an incredible CD. I normally prefer sad songs to sound, well, sad... this genre is a bit lighter and more chipper than I'd like when I want to cry in my cheesecake over a love that's gone wrong. However, Rani's voice makes up for the fact that I just had to change a preference.
As is often the way with bands who headline one of their members, the other members' names aren't as obvious. The gentleman who sings "Snowbird" does a fantastic, FUN job of it -- and of course, Arbo's harmonies are as sweet as the honeysuckle the neighborhood kids would taste when we were kids. Listen to the sound snippet examples to see what I mean.
This CD was recommended to me by one of my professors. My liking this CD has absolutely NO bearing on my grade -- and I love it, anyway. Got it this week, and listened to it six or seven times already"
