Synopsis

Guitarist Coco Montoya started out playing rock & roll, and it shows. On his fourth album, the former John Mayall and Albert Collins sideman rocks his blues hard, with the occasional soul-flavored ballad thrown in for variety. The album kicks off on a note that's high-energy yet relaxed, as Montoya declares that "Enough Is Enough." "I Need Your Love in My Life" is as upbeat and cheering as can be, a sure cure for rainy-day doldrums. And with "Don't Take It Personally" and "You Didn't Think About That," Montoya certainly rocks out. But he's got a soft side too, as the smoky "Fool" and the tender "Nothing but Love" handily illustrate. Although, like his mentor Mayall, Montoya is an indifferent vocalist, he more than makes up for it with his guitar work, which is both expressive and technically brilliant--the blistering solo on "Beyond the Blues" is proof enough of that. Suspicion is Montoya's first album for Alligator Records, and it's unsurprisingly a bit smoother around the edges than his previous records for Blind Pig. Still, it's a strong effort all around, with touches of real warmth and sweetness. --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

Not the same old coco
Wade C. Boring | Springfield, IL United States | 01/18/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This release is totally different from his earlier work such as Gotta Mind To Travel. Coco has roughed up his guitar sound, adding some distortion and loosing the squeaky clean traditional strat formula. His vocals have also matured and gained more individuality. I would classify this CD as more in the "Texas Style" as opposed to his usual urban blues. This CD starts out on high burn and rarely slows down. If you love blues guitar you will love this CD."
Not his best

(3 out of 5 stars)

"I find this first effort of Coco's with Aligator Records somewhat over produced. While it is enjoyable listening it doesn't have nearly the fire and intensity of his earlier work with Blind Pig Records. I would particularly recomend,"Ya Think I'd Know Better."These pevious efforts are more reflective of his background work with John Mayall and Albert Collins. If you buy this cd, you will not necessarily be disappointed, but his earlier efforts will rock your blues soul!"
Not all reviews are worth their weight

"I may be the only one to do this. I purchased this cd because of the reviews and reading about Coco Montoya, I was ready to be dazzled or at least be able to enjoy what I was listening to.
I appreciate that he was with Albert Collins and John Mayall but I found this cd to be like a lot of solo artists music in the 70's, over produced, no identity, no real soul, almost faceless...
I wouldnt even classify this as blues.
I tried I gave it four listens but by the second or third song I wasnt listening anymore, so it just didnt catch my attention. Maybe I expected too much or my tastes are so different, but I really wanted to like this cd.
Just my opinion."
