It's common knowledge that Coldcut are the masters of state-of-the-art sampling technology. Coldcut's segues are seamless, their transitions are absolutely liquid, and their sample selection remains consistently bright and surprising. On this EP the song "Timber" from the band's previous full-length, Let Us Play, is handed over to seven other accomplished remixers for an extended bout of chop, cut, edit, insert.Darren Knott floats a funky '70s bass line and a skittering drum track that pushes the cut close to drum & bass territory. Future 3 opt for a languid, floating whisper of vocals and bubbling synths. Clifford Gilberto pulls out the turntables and cues up an acid-jazz rhythm, drum & bass tempos, and smoky jazz interludes, while Bundy K. Brown of the band Tortoise slings a choppy stop-start rhythm that lands in the echo chamber. As a bonus, five videos by the likes of Emergency Broadcast Network, Hexstatic, and others are tacked onto this disc for your viewing pleasure. Not a bad value for something called an EP. --S. Duda
