A nice listen. Not too hard, not too soft.

Possibly the Best of Collective Soul

"I first heard of Collective Soul with the single "Shine" and I was a little impressed, but not enough to buy the CD. When "Disciplined Breakdown" came out, I decided to give it a shot. WOW!! Talk about major growth as artists!! I was amazed at the complexity and layers of their music as well as the deepness of their lyrics. "Precious Declaration" is one of my favorite songs to rock out to, "Listen" is very artistic pop/rock, "Maybe" is one of my favorite songs - speaks of the feelings you experience of losing someone close to you - beautifully acoustic guitar here. "Full Circle" and "Blame" are gems of pop/rock music as well with very intense lyrics. This was one of the most under-sold and under-rated CDs of the 90's and remains one of my most-played CDs even today. I highly recommend this band to people who value deep lyrics and artistic music... Collective Soul does not disappoint!"

"Collective Soul's third release, and my personal favorite, is Disciplined Breakdown. The album didn't do as well as some of their others, probably due to the fact it is lighter and slower. However, this release shows a new level of creativeness and songwriting. Every song on the album is musically and lyrically amazing. Maybe is a cry of hope to a lost friend, Blame questions the use of anger("question your answers, truth has no anger")and critizes those who would tear others down, Forgiveness finds the writer searching their heart to learn to forgive, and In Between tells of two people who are divided because of their fear of confrontation. Those are just a few examples of the lyrical genius in this album. Overall, this is one of the bands best releases, not to be missed out on."

"The first 6 songs are great: Precious Declaration boasts great riffs and awesome lyrics. Listen has a cool sound and a freakin great guitar solo. Maybe is a nice tribute to a friend who's passed away. Full Circle blends horns nicely. Blame is just plain cool. Disciplined Breakdown is a perfect title track, since it pretty much represents this cd. After track 6, though, it just goes downhill. It's okay to have quiet rock songs, but these tend to blend into each other, and are a bit disappointing. Despite that, though, I still recommend this album. As an extra bonus: it was recorded in a cabin in the middle of nowhere!"
Soul Moving Stuff

"The greatness of a band is not in their hits, but in their albums...and this is a great one. Even after Collective Soul's fifth CD, Blender, I still find Disciplined Breakdown to be their best to date. Each song gives you the sensation that it is JUST THE ONE you were waiting to hear. There seems to be more musical depth here than in their other CDs. I'm amazed at how this album can stir the soul yet soothe it simultaneously. Ed Roland's lyrics aim for the head and the heart highlighting truth, love, faith, forgiveness, etc. Actually, many of the songs seem to ponder the journey itself with all it's choices, fears and wisdom to be gleaned while traveling the road of life in search of all that is great and sweet. Although the meaning of the lyrics is more general and vague than those of other albums such as Hints, this is not necessarily a bad move on the part of Collective Soul. For one thing, the subjectivity leaves the lyrical interpretation up to the listener, creating a sense of discovery. Maybe this is why this album feels so fresh yet so familiar. This album has great aesthetics in content as well as musical form. If you're unfamiliar with Collective Soul, this is your starting point."

"I own over 1100 CDS . This CD rates in the top 50 of my collection. This is one of those rare CDS where every song is good. I highly recommend for anyone`s collection."
