Synopsis
Album Description 2009 collection from the Rock 'n' Roll duo. Larry and Lorrie Collins weren't even into their teens when they began performing. In 1954, they secured a long-running residency on the Los Angeles-based Town Hall Party TV show (later Ranch Party) where Larry quickly fell under the master tutelage of guitarist Joe Maphis. A recording deal with Columbia Records soon followed. Features 21 tracks including 'Hush Money', 'Beetle Bug Bop' and many more. Complete Rock 'n' Roll. |
CD ReviewsLARRY COLLINS' FINE GUITAR PLAYING COMBINED WITH SISTER LORR Stuart Jefferson | San Diego,Ca | 02/02/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "One disc 45 minutes in length approximately. The sound (in mono) is very good-Larry's guitar is crisp and clean, and his sister's voice is out front just enough from the band's country/rockabilly sound-which makes listening to the lyrics very easy. The booklet is very informative-giving a good overview of the COLLINS KIDS' life in music. Included are several good b & w photographs of the brother/sister act and color reproductions of 45 rpm record labels, and a color reproduction of the Columbia Records release "Town Hall Party".
With many people listening to rockabilly music,I'm surprised that the COLLINS KIDS are not more well known. Larry Collins' guitar playing was phenomenal, especially when you consider his age (starting when he was 11),and (slightly older) sister Lorrie's sensual yet perky, country (a bit like Wanda Jackson) voice, that could belt out a flat out rocker,or something closer to teen pop with equal ability. With a number of fairly expensive (though well done) sets released by Bear Family Records, this (inexpensive yet well done) set will fit the bill nicely except for those who wish to own most of their recordings found on the 2 CD sets available. All their important tracks are here, with Lorrie's innocent voice and Larry's fierce country picking in abundance. With titles like "Hush Money","Party","Beetle-Bug Bop","Hop,Skip And Jump","Whistle Bait",and "Hoy Hoy",or "Rock And Roll Polka",this is rockabilly at it's best. Combined with a few teen angst tracks, and you have a great set of innocent yet smoking music. This is innocent, fun yet boppin' rockabilly from an era long past, yet their music still stands out in the present. Find out why the COLLINS KIDS were so popular, both on record and t.v. in the 50's-this set will do just that." |
