Synopsis
Product Description Terry Hall formed The Colourfield in 1983 with ex-Swinging Cats member Toby Lyons and bassist Karl Shale and released their debut album, 'Virgins And Philistines' in 1985. 'Deception', their long awaited follow up album, was released to mixed reviews in 1987. The album, produced by Sire Records founder Richard Gottehrer in New York, revealed a different direction to their debut. Shale had departed before the exhaustive recording sessions, during which they lost another founding member, Tony Lyons. The album was finished with the help of Roland Orzabal from Tears For Fears and Hollywood actress Raquel Welch's backing band. The album included two cover versions, both released as singles. The first 'Running Away', a Sly Stone song, was remixed by Arthur Baker to generate dance floor interest. The second, 'She' (made famous by The Monkees) featured a duet with the emerging talent of Sinead O'Connor amongst its B sides. No further singles were released in the UK. This long overdue reissue has five bonus tracks from singles including their sole release of 1986, 'Things Could Be Beautiful', Hall's first recorded collaboration with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds. Last year, Terry reformed with his old band mates for a 30th Anniversary Tour as The Specials. The shows have been and critical and commercial success This, along with the recent book on The Specials 'You're Wondering Now' and Cherry Red's reissue of the Fun Boy Three's debut album will generate interest in Terry's career. CD ReviewsMid-80s British pop back in print with some bonus tracks and Daniel W. Kelly | Long Island, NY United States | 04/09/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "Not to be confused as a 'new wave' band because they are from Britain, recorded in the 80s, and member Terry Hall was in the Specials AND Fun Boy Three, The Colourfield does show some similarities to those bands at times, but also has a more pop/jazz fusion sound of the mid-80s, often reminding me of post-True Spandau Ballet. This reissue of the second of their two albums has excellent sound quality, even though I read it was supposedly poorly mastered. Along with a couple of b-side bonus tracks, you get the single remix of "She", a second version of "Monkey in Winter" with a pre-popularity Sinead O'Connor handling vocals beautifully, and, what doesn't make sense to me, the Arthur Baker DUB of Running Away (cover of a Sly Stone song). I don't understand WHY they didn't include the VOCAL 12" mix by Arthur Baker! The dub is a pretty pointless instrumental. Oh well, do they EVER get the track lists right on these reissues???"
