Synopsis

Album Description
That winter, The Comas sought out producer Bill Racine after being impressed with his work with The Flaming Lips, Rogue Wave and The Mates of State, among others. Racine lead them to Allaire Studios located in a rather immense, somewhat spooky mansion nestled atop the Catskill Mountains. The studio included a 360-degree panoramic view of the snow just beginning to blanket the terrain of the hilly and heavily forested Upstate New York. As recording began, stories of magic, enchantment, and spirits started to surface about the house where The Comas were creating their fourth work. In contrast to ordinary haunted tales, the songs on The Comas' latest album were mere skeletons upon entering the mansion, awaiting life, as opposed to their ultimate deaths. During their stay these songs grew stronger with the very atmosphere that surrounded them, only to exit as the living, breathing album that is, Spells.

CD Reviews

Blown Away!!!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"From track 1 - 10 this is pure dynamite! The Comas blend a new sound of instrumental beats, fuzzy guitar solo's and amazing keyboards blended with psychedelic sounds of yesterday. I would recommend any music lover picking up "Spells".. The band show's there diverse style in almost every song. Definitly the best I've heard in 07.."
Nice sound, so-so songs

"I love this style of rock, big fuzzed-toned guitars with group vocals (no particular voice stands out here), songs like "Come My Sunshine" really hit the mark. The same sound can be taken down a notch and turned into a bliss out like "Now I'm a Spider" and works just as well. The only problem here is that the material doesn't rise to match the sound. "Red Microphones" is a good example of a song that tries to build around a hook that just isn't there, and ends up meandering off when the center falls apart. I don't know what they can do about the song writing, probably nothing - some people can write hooks (and become music gods) and some can't. Possibly they will get lucky, but for the meantime it would help if they concentrated on maintaining a groove, because switching gears just wrecks a song like "New Wolf" that could have worked."
Spells is effective album

"Few bands have the magnetism that Comas have, a special band. they just capture it. Broken West should be opening for them."
