Poor Louis Vierne: nearly blind; faithless wife; son slain in the trenches in the Great War; fell into an open sewer, broke his leg, and nearly lost it due to infection; died at the keyboard of the organ of Notre Dame de Paris.

Fantastic artist: really I would rank Vierne second only to Fauré--(and perhaps Franck)--and that's saying a lot!

Recommend this set and especially the set of solo piano works Vierne: Works for Piano; the mélodies Louis Vierne: Mélodies, Vol. 2; and of course the spectacular organ symphonies Louis Vierne: Complete Organ Symphonies.

WONDERFUL UNKNOWN FRENCH MUSIC
GEORGE RANNIE | DENVER, COLORADO United States | 02/20/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Having been a would-be church organist in my youth, I only thought of Louis Vierne as a composer of some monumental organ works which I on many occasions struggled unsuccessfully to learn to play. Through much sweat and tears I, however, did really enjoy his lush and romantic (sometimes bombastic) compositions; therefore, when the opportunity (with this recording) came to hear another facet (turns out a major one) of his compositional output I readily purchased this recording. I'm very glad that I did because it certainly contains some masterpieces of Romantic Chamber music (which I love!). This is a groundbreaking release presenting (I believe) his chamber music in its entirety-at least that's what it says on the "jacket liner".

The 2 CDs are very full running almost 80 minutes each. The Piano quintet is lovely as well as the Sonatas for violin and cello. I loved this recording! It certainly satisfies, in a large way, my appetite for something "new and different" (in other words music that goes beyond the "standard repertoire") while, at the same time, it nourishes by insatiable appetite for late romantic chamber music!
