"Carl Nielsen's first instrument was a trumpet, but as a composer he spent much of his time at the piano, which can be heard in his many Danish songs. Still Nielsen did not compose any major orchestral pieces for piano. He did however create some of the finest piano music around, first inspired by Brahms, but as obvious in both "Chanconne" and "Theme with Variations", he created a Danish style of piano music unlike anything else. Considering the low price of this CD, splurge and buy the likewise excellent recording of his Volume 2. If you like Nielsen's piano, try his pieces for organ. He was not just a great composer for orchestra, but also a master of single instruments. Sit back and listen to this very approachable and charming music."
