"Gregson is a sadly underexposed composer, but this CD gives us a chance to hear his most wonderful work, the tuba concerto. Played with a touching delicacy, we hear here the deep melancholy which affected Gregson as he laboured to produce the piece. The beauty of the opening movement is perhaps the greatest to be found in the entire lower bras repertoire, and few conductors could guide it with the sympathy required; Newsome however succeeds admirably. I cannot recommend this CD enough, even if you intend, like me, to listen to just one work over and over again. The sound quality is excellent, and if you love any one of Gregson's concertos, this is the recording to have."
