These two luscious and absolutely yummy cello concertos come from opposite ends of the composer's career--his Parisian period during the first couple of decades of this century, and the 1950s, by which time he had become the Grand Old Man of Brazilian music. Both are exotic, hyperactive workouts for the soloist, but neither is especially long--one of the factors that no doubt accounts for their rarity in performance. Both works are extremely attractive, and given the lack of the great music for cello and orchestra, it would make sense for more cellists to take them up. As you can hear for yourself on this excellent disc, they're worth investigating. --David Hurwitz
