"I finally have all 3 of Conya's albums and they are all great. Perfect to put them in a playlist together and put it on shuffle. It just all fits. Whether it's a mellow groove to enjoy with that special someone, or an up-tempo groove, she handles it well.
This is her first CD and I think she made a great start, each CD after gets better and better so also check out "Just Because" and "Love Rain Down".
Some reviewers mentioned that she's trying to be Jill Scott, I totally disagree. There's nothing in her songs, voice, or style that remind you of Jill Scott. Honestly, all the comparisons to other artists just don't seem fair. If Conya came first, we'd say Mary was trying to be like her...and so on and so on. If you're comparing just to give some and idea of her style, that's one thing. But if you're comparing because you're saying she's "trying" to mimmick someone else, simply not true. If you do get to know Conya, you'll see that she does have her own style...it's just a little more mellow. She's not over-the-top hitting high notes left and right...just soft and smooth. I even made a playlist of all of her ballads and you can play it in ANY order, and there's NO threat of breakin' the mood. ;-)
Anyway, if you can find it, definitely pick it up.
Fave Tracks:
Starship - Great remake, I love the song and her version of it
Selfish One (interlude) - It's short but nice...Conya has a way with words
That's Not Love - Catchy ballad
So Fly
Meantime
Heaven (duet)
Smile Again - This is my FAVORITE on the CD.
If you're unsure about Conya, then I'd say start off with her 2nd CD "Just Because" (it's easier to find if you can't get a hold of this one). If you're already a fan, then pick it up and prepare to be dazzled!
I noticed Conya has a pattern of releasing an album every 2 years..."Poem" in 2002; "Just Because" in 2004; "Love Rain Down" in 2006. I hope that we can expect something from her this year...

Great Album

"I completely agree with Babygirl-some people went into listening to this album expecting an Erykah Badu or Jill Scott-like style, but she's neither one of them. While I'll say that Conya has an organic soul feel to "A Poem About Ms. Doss," it has every bit of a Mary J. or Faith contemporary feel. I hate comparing artists to one another before listening to an album because it would limit my listening experience if I expected to hear "Bag Lady," "He Loves Me," or even Ledisi's "In the Morning/Alright" from Conya. Those who weren't as thrilled with the album as I am probably have done this. To me, the whole album is good but my top 5 (in no particular order) would be:
1) Smile Again
2) Coffee
3) All Because of You
4) You Really Hurt Me
5) Heaven
The album's out of print now, so it's gonna cost a fortune (I know from experience), but if you don't know someone who has the album you should cop it while there are still some available."
