Everyone loves Handel's choruses, and probably no other composer had such an intuitive feel for the sound of massed voices in a big space. The problem with Handel's oratorios, of course, is all of those nasty arias (which is why Israel in Egypt, which has very few, is so popular today). So if you're a chorus nut who can't stand solo singing, why not try the four Coronation Anthems--like Bach's Magnificat, they contain just about everything he could do with a chorus, but all packed into a small space. These performances are as good as any, and a top recommendation. The perfect disc for Handelians with short attention spans. --David Hurwitz

"OK, so Nev and the boys and girls of the ASMF don't use period instruments, but this version leaves the period instrument versions I've heard for dead. The ASMF plays with all the exuberance and bounce for which it is famous, and this approach and the richer sound of modern instruments suits Handel's wonderful spectacular anthems to perfection."
