Synopsis

Album Description
2009 collaboration project from Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard that comes with a bit of a twist: Pollard hooked up with another Indie Rock icon, Richard Davies (The Moles, Cardinal), to form the band Cosmos. To round out the ensemble, Davies enlisted some of his Massachusetts merry men to assist with the music, including David Minehan (The Neighborhoods) and Malcom Travis (Human Sexual Response, Sugar).

Better Than Average Pollard Side Project
J. Galanek | Portland, OR | 07/25/2009
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I am a long time Pollard fan, and have most everything he's released. This Cosmos project did not seem to get much attention, especially since he released a Boston Spaceships and solo record around the same time (I think - it's hard to keep track sometimes!). Well this is a really nice surpise for a couple of reasons. As with any Pollard side project, there are always the 2-3 tunes that keep reminding the kids why they fell in love with Mr. Pollard's song writing to begin with. With this album, check out "The Neighborhood Trapeze", "Westward Ho", and "Nude Metropolis". These are wonderful little pop-rock gems that are classic Bob. As for the other songs, Richard Davies does a fine job of providing counterpoint to Pollard's vocals. His songs are also in the same British Nuggets lo-fi vein, and the album being split with two singers works for a tidy pop diamond package. "The Grapes of Wrath" is a particularly catchy tune by Mr. Davies that is a good representation of what he brings to Cosmos. The instrumentation is simple, but effective, similar in some ways to Pollard's other albums. Their is also a bit of psychedelia included with a couple of interesting Pink Floydish instrumentals. So if you are looking for a good Bob side project to satisfy you, and the Circus Devils might be too "out there" for you, Cosmos will do just nicely until the new Boston Spaceships album lands. Recommended for Bob fans, of course, but this could also be a nice introduction to the world of Pollard's side projects for the curious."
