Album Description
After his swing-era big band broke up during 1949-'50, Count Basie started up a new group in 1952. Due to Basie's name, a record contract with producer Norman Granz, and a winning concept, the band caught on. The new Basie big band relied more on arranged ensembles, often written in the early days by Neal Hefti and Ernie Wilkins. No soloist was indispensable, even the leader, and that fact has allowed the Count Basie Orchestra to continue touring the world even today, 24 years after Basie's death.
