CD Reviews

Beautiful 70's folk/rock from a group out of Hawaii

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I love many things that come out of Hawaii. I "accidently" discovered this CD while browsing through this wonderful Hawaiian store in Mill Valley, CA. They were playing some beautiful music and I asked who the band was. They sold me the last CD that they had and I've enjoyed it ever since. This is NOT the ethnic hawaiian music you're used to hearing but more along the lines of early 70's acoustic rock. The band writes about their love of the Islands and also about the destruction of their land due to development. It's too bad you can't listen to Sun Lite/Moon Lite as a section. It's truly a beautiful piece with wonderful harmonies. Unfortunately, like many bands of the 70s, two of the members died from drug related problems and the band self destructed. It's too bad they didn't lots more music."
Contemporary Hawaii Music At Its Best

"If you're not familiar with modern Hawaii music, this CD is a good place to start. I grew up in Hawaii in the '70s, and I can honestly tell you that Country Comfort-- at their best --truly captured the essence of what Hawaii "feels" like. The green valleys, blue ocean, and the misty, rainbow-filled Windward side-- Country Comfort captures all of this in an uncanny way. They were thoughtful, peaceful, soulful, and their very best works were original songs, now featured on this CD: "Sunlight, Moonlight," "Waimanalo Blues," and "We Are the Children." Their music has a homegrown, grassroots-type of feel, as though they were recorded in the same room simultaneously, with one mike. But trust me, the effect is warm and endearing. Again, you won't hear many bands who convey the essential "feeling" of their environment (and a rather pleasant feeling it is!). I know, I grew up there, and my opinion of Country Comfort is shared by many. I love the guitar work-- esp. check out "Waimanalo Blues." Now THAT is so Hawaiian! I know, the term "genius" is too widely-applied these days, and maybe you really had to be there. But at their best, Country Comfort, for my money, comes pretty darned close!"
I really like this album

"I first heard this album and in particular "Waimanalo Blues" while serving with the US Coast Guard in Hawaii in 1976 and bought the LP version. I have listened to the songs since then because it almost lets you feel like you are there. I am thrilled that it is now out on CD."
