A Grand Work From A Grand Master
06/18/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"A grand work from one of the grand masters. In "The Creation", Haydn has told the story of our creation with a stunning mixture of intimacy, passion and grandiose. This is a big work, with the potential for the exploration of a diversity of sounds. One would expect, that the creation of earth would conjure an image of grandness, wonder and sheer delight. However, I find that this recording doesn't go as far as is possible.Weil and his cast delicately open the work with beauty, mystery and intrigue, and then burst into "let there be light". I feel that the grandiose of not just this chorus, but the whole recording, suffers from the fact that the chorus only consists of a "Knabenchor". Although beautiful, and grand when so desired, I believe a greater impact can be made with the addition of more mature voices, particularly in the alto, soprano range. That aside, they do have a feel for the passion and energy of the music, that is often hard to find with singers so young. The soloists, especially the soprano, Ann Monoyios, do a superb job. She has a fine voice that traverses the music with utter ease. While strong in tone, she still floats airily above the chrous, portraying wonder and beauty with each silky note.Harry van der Kamp, is a strong forceful bass with a rich voice that glides effortlessly through the many volumes and dimensions of the music. The tenor, Jorg Hering, has a fresh, crisp, dramatic voice, and conveys real passion and energy in No. 3 Aria and Chrorus. However, his lower register is somewhat unsubstantial.Of particular delight is the Tafelmusik on period instruments. They produce an amazingly full, but not overpowering sound. It balances well with the choir and solists. This is a modern (1993) recording produced by Sony using 20-bit technology. The sound is very clear, with great bass coming through, giving a forceful, dynamic and superbly penetrative sound. Apart from the lack of depth in the chorus, this is still a superb recording."
