CD Reviews

Nice collection, mostly of covers
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 01/20/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Not all the featured songs here began life as country songs, but every one of them is well suited to Cristy Lane's easy listening country style. The two bonus tracks (I'm with you tonight, You're healing my heart) appear to be original songs as I can't locate any other versions of them and I don't remember hearing them elsewhere. The remaining tracks are all covers, mostly of very familiar songs, and all sticking faithfully to the originals. Less familiar than most is Love lies, which was the title track to one of Janie Fricke's albums but I don't think it was released as a single because it was not a hit for Janie. Cristy's cover serves as a reminder that it is a great song that could so easily have been a big hit.

Among the songs that are undisputable classics, you'll find Cristy's covers of I have a dream (Abba), Making believe (Kitty Wells), Before the next teardrop falls (Freddy Fender), Sweet dreams (the Don Gibson song most commonly associated with Patsy Cline), It's now or never (set to the tune of O sole mio, but in this form one of Elvis Presley`s classics) and Misty blue (a country hit for Eddy Arnold, but later an international pop hit for Dorothy Moore). Two traditional songs (He's got the whole world in his hands, Danny boy) close the collection.

This is a great collection for Cristy's fans, of whom I am one, but I doubt that it will win her any new fans. It makes a good companion CD to 23 Millennium Classics, as there is no duplication of tracks between them."
