Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
Cuban trumpeter Jesús Alemañy and his band strike again with a ripping album of hot Latin roots and jazz. As always, the mix is clean, hard-edged, and rarely lush. They mix together some of the more famous dance grooves of Cuba and Latin America, the mambo, the son, and the son montuno. The premier track is "El Paso de Encarnacion," a hot guaracha from the old Orquesta Aragón songbook. It's not a nostalgic look back, but just one example of how this band can stay away from pop fusion and still sound as contemporary as tomorrow. The band is outstanding. Alemañy's horn is always at the center of things, with the phenomenal Tata Güines on congas, Emilio del Monte doing the timbales. Bassist Carlos del Puerto (formerly of Irakere) keeps the rhythm together with pianist Nachito Herrera and Carlos Godines's clave and güiro. New to the group for this recording is a fine singer, Rolo Martinez. Notable solos are contributed by Orlando "Maraca" Valle on flute and Pancho Amat on tres. The arrangements are tight, the descarga (improv jams) are stunning, and the sound is at once rooted in the past and constantly looking forward. Album 3 and this band still shows no sign of getting tired or repeating themselves. --Louis Gibson

CD Reviews

If you can't dance to this then your feet are rooted!

"Wish you were in Cuba? Then pour a rum, light a cigar, put on this disc, turn up the volume and close your eyes. If you aren't up and dancing by the end of this album then man you ain't got rhythm! This is a feel good, dance/party sound. Cubanismo have a very tight rhythm and horn section and great vocals. I recently attended a concert by Cubanismo in Taiwan. Although 99% of the people had no idea what the lyrics meant, and were probably not very familiar with this type of music the whole audience was bopping and swaying to the music throughout the concert and shouting for more at the end. They are HOT,HOT,HOT. Don't miss this band if they come to your town, a great evenings entertainment. Enjoy the disc."
Hottest Cuban Band today!

"This and Malembe have solidified Cubanismo! as the hottest band out of Cuba now. There are lyrics, "descargas" (jamming), talent and a lot of "sabor". And of course Alemany's fat and typically cuban trumpet soloing all over the place. With due respect to the late "tresero" and pillar of this music, this band is like Arsenio on steroids!"
Wow.

"I am a newcomer to Cuban music; my previous exposure to it was through American musicians of Cuban descent (Gloria Estefan and various members of KC's Sunshine Band come to mind immediately). I couldn't have found a better place to start than this CD. Just pick a song and listen - you won't be disappointed. Don't worry if you don't speak Spanish - I don't, and that means the vocals simply become another instrument. Highlights for me include 'El Perico' (Don't cry!) and 'Ibiono Utereran'; and do any of my fellow Deadheads think 'Canto Al Monte' sounds like 'Scarlet Begonias'?"
