CD ReviewsTalking Heads in Mandarin James B. Whitney | Minneapolis, MN. USA | 01/07/2008 (3 out of 5 stars) "I am curious by nature and therefore when I heard about Cui Jian, the most popular rock act in China, I was intrigued. One has to admire a man whose songs provided the soundtrack for the student protests of the late 80's. This having been said, the music on this cd is not what I expected. I was hoping for something more like punk than new wave but Cui Jian sounds more like the Talking Heads than the Clash. If this sort of thing appeals to you, you might enjoy this but I prefer more anthemic songs.
From what I hear, Cui Jians' lyrics are very critial of the Chinese government in particular and the status quo in general but since the songs are sung in Mandarin and the accompanying booklet is also in the same language I have no idea what he is on about. If I liked the music more, this would no bother me but since I am really not a fan of new wave, I find this stuff rather mediocre. Nevertheless, some of th songs are o.k. and it is interesting to know what is hot in China these days. As I said before, if you are a fan of new wave or speak Mandarin, Cui Jian might be what you are looking for. but I rarely listen to this cd." |
