CD Reviews

Dark techno + 80s + porno = electroclash
06/01/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A fantasticly devilish set. Dark, sexy electro. A vary rare, original, and all togther alien style. The porno flare keeps things sinister. Its like the 80s with WAY too much blotter. If you like electro check it out."
An incredibly good mix of pumping electro and moody darkness

"DJ Hell turns out another excellent mix of dark electro, electroclash, techno, and some classic rock tunes. He's put out a lot of material in the way of mix CDs and I found "Japanese Gigolo Inferno" to be one of his most thoroughly enjoyable releases.

As Hell has done previously, he starts things on a mysterious note with a killer track from Dopplereffeck. He seems to include a good amount of their material in all his mixes, almost like a trademark. I suppose they could count as a relatively obscure artist - depends on who is listening. The lesser known music is balanced by many electroclash favorites include a couple tracks by Miss Kittin and the Hacker, Fischerspooner, and Tiga. But don't worry - it's not just another electro mix. I'm guessing that an average electronic music fan will know maybe 40% of the music, so there is plenty of new material to maintain interest.

The best thing going for this mix is the great mood it sets - thoroughly modern and very dark. It's obviously more than background music, but it would also work quite well at a party to set a very hip mood. Above all, it's just one of those CDs that makes you feel cool when you hear it. A strange comment perhaps, but you can imagine what I'm getting at.

My one caveat concerns its unavailability in North America. For some reason the International DJ Gigolos label doesn't release everything here, so the listener must absorb the 'import' price. The CD is worth buying at any price that is close to normal, but it's probably not worth buying as an import when there are so many other great electro/techno mixes more easily available.

My recommendation is to check out the track list. That will give you a good idea of what to expect. DJ Hell can really make tunes weird when he wants, but on this outing, he seems to be playing it fairly straight - he lets the music speak for itself. Even if his DJ skills aren't front and center, his pacing and variety are impeccable - that's why it's earning five stars from me."
