Synopsis

Album Description
London/Tokyo/Los Angeles based Play Label has put together a collaboration that will excite club music fans everywhere. DJ Spooky and Twilight Circus Dub Sound System have both dipped into their musical bag of tricks and produced a storming experimental hip-hop/dub classic that truly breaks new ground. The mission started when DJ Spooky contributed the ruff hip hop/dub crossover track "If/When" to Play Label's compilation 2.SCISSORS. Subsequently Play Label interested Spooky in participating in a more dub-based project with Twilight Circus Dub Sound System. The resulting Riddim Clash is both atmospheric, psychedelic, and dub-wise at the same time, and will no doubt appeal to fans of each artists previous work, as well as broaden their respective audiences. DJ Spooky tha Subliminal Kid is without doubt one of the versatile and creative music producers working in the USA today. The multi-talented DJ Spooky has been a seminal force in dance music over the last decade, even pioneering his own genre of music, ?iIlbient?, in the process. Based in New York, the prolific producer is a noted proponent of merging avant-garde theories of music with the mastery of the DJing techniques of scratching and mixing. To that end, Spooky has been a critical figure in spotlighting the DJ as a! post-modern poet in his own right. Influenced equally by John Cage and Sun Ra as Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, few artists have done more to champion the concept of DJ-as-artist. The Twilight Circus Dub Sound System is widely recognized as one of the top acts in the world working in the dub genre today.

Let Me Steer You Straight
Kenneth M. Goodman | Cleveland, Ohio United States | 07/07/2004
(3 out of 5 stars)

"If you love DUB, lemme steer you straight.
Don't order this, but order Twilight Circus's
"Dub From The Secret Vaults." I would estimate,
conservatively, that Dub From The Secret Vaults
is approximately 10,000 times better than "Riddim Clash."
Sorry to say anything negative, but Secret Vaults is
SO much beter, I felt I had to speak up. Thank you."

"Imagine my excitement when I heard that DJ Spooky and Twilight Dub were doing an album together. Two of my favotite producers on one album...sure to be a wild trip through hip hop, dub and otherworldy ambience. For the most part you get exactly what you would expect from this pair, however there are a few un-expected twists. Several of the tracks feature some really elegant string work. Also some very technical, almost IDM edits on live drums. Still digesting this one. The album is very playfull but seems to have some deeper meaning."
