CD Reviews

His first solo album in a decade

"Dan's first solo album in about a decade. A bit of a hodge-podge, but a nice one. The songs range from folk, to country, to pop, to contemporary Christian. Best songs are Heartland, Missing You, and What It Means (with his Peace partners Marvin and Gentry). His cover of the Beatles classic This Boy is also very good."

Bodden Town is a song about where Dan and his wife were living. I think it is on one of the Cayman Islands but I'm not sure. The tune is bouncy and jovial. Dan sounds a little like Mark Knoffler on this one. Little Darlin' is a very sweet acoustic tune which is quite delightful. Missing You sounds like something that could have been from America's early days. The song is quite good and full of heartfelt emotion. Magnolia paints some very nice images in my mind when I hear it. It too is quite good. This Boy is a decent Beatle cover. I can't say that I really remember the Beatles singing it. Amarillo is a bit on the lame side, for me at least. Heartland is one of the best songs on the cd. Dan sounds like Neil Young on this one. The Last Tear, I can't recall that one right now. Pure & Lovely is a very nice song of Dan's Christian Faith. Not sure what wailing Wall is about but it's a good tune. What It Means does very little for me. I could do without this song. Everywhere I Go is not that memorable but I guess it is ok.

Overall this cd is very pleasant. I have found myself listening to this cd quite a bit. It has some sort of addictive quality about it. I guess I decipher more of it with each new listen. I would say this is a good introduction to Dan Peek is you haven't heard any of his solo cds. Over on [...] Dan offers up three cds for $15. The offer is Bodden Town, Carribean Christmas and Driftin'. CC is entirely instrumental. It isn't fantastic but it is good. It seems a bit amateuristic but I think most people will enjoy the cd. I also recommend America's Christmas cd, although I don't have it yet. I have previewed it and many of the tunes sound pretty fun. I guess the best part of Dan's CC cd is that it is all instrumental, lots of steel drums and so on. Some songs are better than others. This too gets played a lot at my house. As for the cd Driftin', so far I find that album to be a stinker. I've only made it through about seven songs and really, I just think it is pretty bad as bad music goes. It makes one wonder if anyone was sober. The cd sounds like rehearsals of songs that are not finished. Christopher Cross's song Sailing is covered on that cd. The cover is just god awful, imo of course.

Anyway, the two cds that I recommended Bodden Town and Carribean Christmas are well worth your money. Go to [...]. I got my cds very quickly. Order the $15 package as it is the best deal that Dan has going.

Thanks for making some tunes for us Mr Dan. Hope you and the wife are doin' just fine.
