"I recommand this box of Shafran to all reviewers, with some reasons,
1. This box it's a good value of collecting the live records that Shafran performed during Russia period, in a ecomonic price.
2. It collected some important cellist compositions in it, from russia, to other european important composers. You will find Shafran he is a excellent fully cellist, not only russia cellist.
3. During this box, it's especially outstanding on his sonatas, ex shostakovich, rachmaninov and breval. He had good cooperation with all pianoists. However, his short pieces, ex tchaikovsky, popper were also excellent too. Of couse, you would find his overall professional performance in concertos.
Finally, it's worth purchasing to collect."
Greatest cellist of the 20th century, playing what he knows

""Greatest" may be a silly category -- greater than Fournier, Piatigorsky, Rostropovich? -- but listen to the playing of Rachmaninov and Shostakovitch (especially the second cello concerto) on these inspired discs, and you will be tempted to agree that this was the performer for whom the cello was invented. Kabalevsky too attains sublime heights that he barely deserves, carried on wings of sound that only Shafran could find. Simply amazing, even on the hundredth hearing. Rather than a mere 5 out of 5 stars, this deserves much more."
