CD Reviews

A letdown

(2 out of 5 stars)

"Doesn't even remotely compare (IMVHO) to her ecstatic 1999 live offering, Electrica. The only saving grace is "Para De Chorar," the very funky club-style bonus track. Even favorites that could've saved this set (like usually-amazing "Ill Parole Negra") come off weak. And Mercury's vocals here (again, save the studio track) sound overworked and, at times, (dare I say) half-assed. I am a longtime fan of Daniela and her band, but this one disappointed on first few listens. Who knows, though. Maybe it'll grow on me. (Stranger things have happened...)"
Daniela is back

"I consider myself to be a fan of Daniela, but I admit to being very disappointed with her last 2 studio albums, the so-so _Sol Da Liberdade_ and the weak _Sou De Qualquer Lugar_. I really bought this because I'm a fan and expected very little. It's an incredible album filled with first rate performances from start to finish. Daniela and her producer Nelson Motta wisely chose some of her biggest hits to go along with some inspired cover songs to make an unforgettable live album. All the guest performers were outstanding, although you really have to see the DVD (to my knowledge, so far only released in Brazil) to fully appreciate Jovanotti's Norm MacDonald look on "Ive Brussel". The bonus track, "Para De Chorar" finds Daniela comfortably singing a Gloria Estefan style dance number. My favorite songs from this included "Ive Brussel", "To Remember", and "Milagre Do Povo". There is a reason why Daniela is called the Queen of Axe. It's because she's the only Axe artist whose songs don't all sound the same. Daniella is back! I think this may be her best album yet, although I still have a fond spot in my heart for the brilliant _Feijao Com Arroz_. Highly recommended. It's the best Brazilian album of the year in my humble opinion. There must be something about performing on MTV in Brazil because Jorge Ben Jor's _Acustico MTV_ from last year was absolutely brilliant as well."
Okay, but get the DVD.

"The latest album from Daniela Mercury is enjoyable, especially of the guests; however, it does not fully live up to the last Live album in 1999 nor Sol da liberdade and Sou do qualquer lugar. I do have the DVD and recommend it highly. I give it 6 stars if Amazon would allow me. It's great visually and sounds great."
