Amazon.comRecorded live in Rochester, New York, Smokin Java presents pianist Darrell Grant in a quintet with alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, vibraphonist Joe Locke, drummer Brian Blade, and bassist Bob Stata. The band's quick on its feet in tackling Jones's title track and Locke's "Slander," but they shine wonderfully on the session's slower points: "You Must Believe in Spring," Gordon Jenkins's "Goodbye," and Carmen Lundy's gorgeous "Quiet Times." Grant has found new creative space since his 1997 relocation to Portland, Oregon, and he shows off how delicately--and then how feverishly--he can put his chops on display. Locke's "Slander" is a high point for every musician, veering and leaping and hopping with effervescent joy. --Andrew Bartlett
