CD Reviews

Second solo release.

"This is the second release from the Dave Gahan solo effort Paper Monsters. This cd comes with 4 versions of "I Need You" plus 2 bonus tracks. The first 3 tracks are the radio mix of "I Need You"(3:33),"Closer"(4:08) and "Breathe"(4:56) that are moody as any Depeche Mode tracks ever were. The remixes are the Ladytron Detoxxmixx(4:01) and is the electro mix of the mixes. The Jay's SummerDub Mix(6:25) is a jazzy/house type mix with little vocals. The best remix is the Gabriel & Dresden Unpluuged Mix(10:13) and is the best mix they have done since Jewel's "Serve The Ego". I cannot tell you how incredible and hot Mr. Gahan always sound under a great house mix. This mix should take him to the higher parts of the Billboard Dance Charts. Awesome remix and song. Better than "Dirty Sticky Floors " and that got to number 3 for 2 weeks on the club charts.A++++++++"
Dave Gahan's "Breathe" is a B-side Treasure!

"After a successful tour in the USA, Dave Gahan releases his 2nd single off of Paper Monsters : I Need You. The single mix version is given a lot of extra work and is much more heavy laden with electronic sounds than the album version, making it even more irrisistable to listen to. Three additional remixes of the title track are also included. You never know what to expect with remixes, but these particular ones are quite well done indeed. The Ladytron Detoxxmmixx goes a step further than the single mix version and just goes all out, with heavy electronic, synth & base laden tracks, and even some acoustic guitar thrown in for good measure. But if you're in a dancing mood, nothing beats the Gabriel & Dresden Unplugged Mix. A whopping 10 minutes (and 13 seconds) long, this track just keeps building and building and never stops. (or disappoints!) Dave's got an additional echo effect done to him in many parts that really enhances the effect of his voice. Highly satisfying. I just wish the "Plugged Dub" version (which is on the 12") was also included. Jay's Summerdub, the last of the three remixes, is the slower and moodier of the bunch, going for a very jazzy light approach which works really well. The lyrics aren't sung too much here. It's more the sounds of Dave's voice echoing and repeating, with an "I need you!" sung here and there. Very nicely done. Two B-sides are also included: Closer & Breathe, and on first glance of the titles themselves I thought perhaps Dave was taking on the famous Nine Inch Nails classic tune as well as attempting his own vocal version of Martin Gore's Breathe from the Exciter album. To my suprise I found that "Closer" was the much talked about "Ocean Song" that Dave had wanted to include on the Depeche Mode album: "Ultra" but was turned down. It's quite good ("The ocean keeps rolling in") but I can see why Martin Gore and company felt it wasn't right for Ultra. But the biggest surprise was "Breathe". It's not the same song as the one from Exciter, and I must admit, I don't really like the idea of Dave giving his songs titles that have already been used on Depeche Mode albums. But then again...I just LOVE this song! It's a very whispy, moody, and hauntingly tender love song. The guitar riffs are just right, and Dave's voice is even more honest and vulnerable. ("Breeeeaathe for me. We can be together...if you breathe for me.") The chorus, which is just lovely, reminded me of a song called "Chrome Waves" which was done by a British band called "Ride" back in 1992 (on their 2nd and most successful album, "going blank again"). They used a very similar note combination. But Dave Gahan's Breathe is a wonderful treasure to listen to and behold. I really wish it had been put on Paper Monsters...I just can't stop listening to it, it's that good. What's nice about this US cd single is that you get all the tracks that are on the UK CD1 & CD2 singles, all on one CD. The only difference is, for some reason, the Gabriel Dresden Unplugged Mix is 9 minutes and 39 seconds on the UK CD2, instead of the full 10 minutes and 13 seconds that you get here on the US CD single. However, the UK also got a DVD single of I Need You, which included an acoustic video performance of Black and Blue Again, the Instrumental version of the I Need You - Ladytron Detoxxmix, and another remix of Dirty Sticky Floors : the Lexicon Avenue Dirty Sticky Dub. Even if you purchase the UK DVD you can't watch it because, unlike the previous Dirty Sticky Floor UK DVD Single which was a PAL REGION 0 (playable worldwide), the I Need You DVD single is PAL REGION 2, which only plays in Europe. There are a ton of loyal fans of Dave Gahan and Depeche Mode here in the USA, and as one of them I feel compelled to say that we deserve better from Mute and Reprise records. Let's hope they start listening."

"The highlights of this CD single are the songs closer and breathe. This songs are so good that they could have been included in his album. The unplugged remix of I need you is the best mix on the cd with its club feel and beat to it. Any fan of david gahans would enjoy this CD single."
