My Dave Mason Story
J. Gabriel | 07/09/2000

"Twenty one years ago, after I had been married a year, I fell in love with another man. We never breached the line of monogomy, so when he asked me to leave my husband and move away with him, I didn't think he was serious. He told me he had a song to play for me. He never played it. He moved, I stayed. Three grown children for me and two grown children for him and with the very sparce contact we've had with each other throughout the years, he finally told me the title of the song. It was "Maybe" by Dave Mason. I bought the CD without ever hearing any of the songs. When I listened to it for the first time, I felt as if someone had reached in my chest, grabbed my heart and squeezed it. Although we live 1,000 miles away from each other, our lives seem to have come full circle. I am forever/still in love with this man. Now, maybe anything HE wants me to I'll be....p.s. The other songs are just gravy... truely sung from the heart... wonderful!"

"what an excellent record. i looked for this title on cd for years & could never find it. this has to be dave's greatest record ever. one rocks'most underated guitarists'. if you've ever seen him live you know what i mean. graham nash's harmony vocals are superb & the "son of harry" slide guitar on "if you've got love" is as good as it gets, because it's george harrison long time friend of daves'. get this cd & play the heck out of it."
Terrific album by an under-rated artist

"Dave Mason somehow got lost in the shuffle of his on-again, off-again relationship with Steve Winwood and Traffic. And then he had a rough relationship with the Blue Thumb label, although Alone Together is an absolute classic. When he got out from under all that Dave Mason next showed up on the Columbia label, with It's Like You Never Left. What a great surprise this was. Guest vocals from Graham Nash, great guitar work throughout. Stevie Wonder too! And the songs are great. Maybe and Every Woman are two beautiful love songs. Headkeeper, in another incarnation, as good as the Blue Thumb version. Misty Morning Stranger, one of my all-time favorites. And one day I'd love to hear the full version of Side Tracked, a little gem of an instrumental.I played cuts from this album all the time on my college radio show nearly 30 years ago, and for me, it's one of the best albums of the 70s. A small treasure, to be sure, but a treasure just the same."
